Wins on Wins on Wins

After my time with the Pittsburgh Pride, I made the switch to Freedom Fastpitch based out New Kensington. Never in my life had I had so much success. Everything tournament we played in, we won. Literally everything! I was on a team of superstars. Every last one of my teammates were the best players from their perspective high school teams. I was very lucky to get to catch for one of the best pitchers PA. I also got to call my own games(pitches), that was the best part. Then I was even luckier to get the opportunity to further my success with this team at the collegiate level. Six of us were recruited by Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. Five of us went.

Just the Beginning

Most of my sport success, and most of my time from ages 6-19 were spent on a softball field. I first started playing because my parents literally forced me too. But at a young age I was the only one who could throw the ball from home plate to second base. So my catching career started before I even knew what I was actually doing. My parents saw I had skill so they got me involved in private lessons. My mom would drive me over an hour so that I could go to my favorite catching coach, Dave Kiriloff, who was once a part of the Orioles organization. Even though he was my coach when I was relatively young I still heard his voice even long after I stopped going to his lessons. I stopped going to lessons with Dave once I started my time with the high school softball and travel ball with the Pittsburgh Pride. This team became my family and I am very lucky to be able to call a lot of my teammates my friends to this day. We didn't win very much but we had a blast.

Is Cheerleading A Sport?

I blame my love for sports on the fact that most of the best moments of my life have been when I was on the field or court. Over my 21 years I have been a cheerleader and have played basketball, volleyball and softball.

Most people say that cheerleading isn't a sport and for a long time I agreed with them. But my mind changed during my senior year of high school when I decided to try our for my schools cheerleading team in effort to spend more time with my friends during our last year together. I was lucky to have made it on the varsity squad and am even luckier because to this day my time on that team are some of the most special memories. The very best moment was getting to cheer on my team at Heinz Field. We lost that game but at that point it didn't even matter, we were just happy to have made it that far.

To be continued...

A Brief History

My name is Mikayla Moretti and I am currently a junior at Slippery Rock University. I plan to enter a career in Event Management. I would like to work with a Pittsburgh professional sports team, specifically the Pittsburgh Penguins. Before SRU, I went to Allegheny College. Allegheny did not have a Sports Management major so that is the main reason I decided to transfer. I am glad I made the switch.
